Évora

We drove from Seville across the border into Portugal, stopping at Évora. Prep here.

We stayed three nights in a boutique hotel called 'Albergaria do Calvario', which was exquisite. Lonely Planet review here. We were welcomed by an Australian/Portuguese woman called Michelle, who immediately made us feel very welcome. This was the first of many positive experiences we had in Portugal.

Évora is a striking town, with layers of history, including a Roman Temple, Moorish elements and later. The Portuguese Inquisition was established in 1536 and lasted officially until 1821. More than 160 Auto-da-fés occured in Evora.

Cromeleques dos Almendres is the oldest stone circle in Europe. It predates Stonehenge by 2,000 years.
