The East River

Ferries that run down the East River provide an easy way to see Manhattan from the water. A pleasant trip. I hadn't fully appreciated the scale and extent of architecture on Manhattan. It is mind-bogglingly massive.

The island of Manhattan was exchanged for the island of Run in the Spice Islands of Indonesia in the Treaty of Breda (1667) between England and the Dutch Republic. Run was an important source of nutmeg, then a very valuable spice.  When the Dutch chose nutmeg over New York.

The High Line

In the West Village area an old abandoned railway line has been restored into a greenified raised walkway known as the High Line. It is an enjoyable walk that leads through old industrial wasteland and some spectacular modern architecture and some objets artistiques.

Top of the Rock and Times Square

The Rockefeller Center is a bit south of Central Park, and a relatively easy spot to get to from our AirBnB. It has one of the best views over the city at night. But it costs, and is very crowded.

Museum of Natural History

We visited the Museum of Natural History with Eva, her brother and band-mate Sam, and his two toddlers, Kinsley and Julian.

The Museum was impressive. There were several beautiful dioramas.

New York street photography

August 17th we flew to New York, via Vancouver. Plenty preparation necessary; it was a relief to take off. Preparation blog here.

We are staying in an AirBnB near the Dakota Building, very close to Central Park. Here are some photos.

Tired and hungry we found a fun Italian restaurant  close to our flat.

Speciality: meatballs

I have been inspired by a New York street photographer called James Maher. He has some interesting books like The New York Photographer's Travel Guide.
